These official rules ensure a positive experience for all competitors, judges, vendors, and attendees. By registering to compete, all participants agree to comply with the following guidelines and any instructions provided by event staff.
Chili Cook-Off Overview

The Chili Champ Tailgating Annual Festival Chili Cook-Off welcomes participants of all experience levels, from professional chefs to home cooks and youth competitors. This cook-off celebrates flavor, creativity, and friendly competition while giving the community a voice in selecting the winners.
The cook-off takes place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Koworx Coworking Space in Venice, Florida, as part of the Chili Champ Tailgating Annual Festival produced by Venice Nights and GBack Media.
Participation Categories
Competitors must register under one of the following categories:
- Professionals: Chefs, food trucks, caterers, restaurants, or anyone who sells food commercially.
- Amateurs: Home cooks and chili enthusiasts who do not sell food commercially.
- Kids Division: Youth participants are welcome with required adult supervision at all times.
Each competitor may enter one category per chili entry.
Accepted Chili Styles
The following chili styles are accepted:
- Traditional: Classic chili recipes and time-honored flavors.
- Freestyle: Creative, non-traditional, or unique chili variations.
- Spiciest: Heat-forward chili entries.
- People’s Champ: Determined by public tasting and voting.
Chili Preparation & Quantity Requirements
Each competitor must prepare a minimum of 4 to 6 quarts of chili. Chili must be brought fully prepared and ready to serve. A crockpot or approved heated container is required, and chili must remain at safe serving temperatures throughout the event.
Open flames are not permitted unless explicitly approved by event organizers.

Food Safety & Liability
All competitors must comply with local and state food safety regulations. A Food Handling and Liability Waiver is required for participation. Gloves, clean utensils, and safe serving practices must be used at all times. Event staff reserves the right to remove any chili entry deemed unsafe or non-compliant.
Judging Criteria
Judging is conducted using a standardized scoring system:
- Taste and Flavor Balance: 50 percent Texture and Consistency: 25 percent Overall Impression: 25 percent
- Judges’ decisions are final.
People’s Champ Voting
The People’s Champ category is decided by public voting. Attendees will receive chili sampling tickets, allowing them to taste participating entries and vote for their favorite chili. The entry receiving the most votes will be crowned People’s Champ.
Entry Fees
Entry fees, if applicable, are outlined in the official competitor registration form. Fees help support event operations, judging logistics, and participant resources.
General Rules & Conduct
All competitors must check in during the designated setup window. Booth areas must remain clean and organized. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. Event organizers reserve the right to modify rules, schedules, or categories as needed to ensure a smooth and safe event.
